(What’s with the plus? That refers to the Patreon exclusive version of the game that includes parody characters showing up to the shop. So far, these characters include Frieren, Tifa, Kim Pine, 2B, y Mama Increible.)

– Added new game button so you don’t need to start a new game through the load screen anymore.

– Meet Raine, Las Nalgas’ resident artist. She’s from France and she’s in charge of the Las Nalgas Arts and Culture Festival. But that’s a story for another day. For now, she’ll be asking Leo for a favor that involves one of our other Nalgonas. To access Raine’s scene, a few things must have happened: attend the rally, talk to officer Montez, and the protest must have started. She’ll be standing by the bench in the plaza.

– Yu’s scenes. While we haven’t formally met her yet, Yu is the pregnant protester. She has two scenes in this update. I don’t want to spoil too much but the first involves Raine’s favor, and the second is her coming into the parlor. What could cause this concerned parent to change her mind about Leo’s business?

– Scoring System

– Rebel/Conform Spectrum: I don’t want to call it a morality system and I find myself struggling to come up with a good term for it. I wrote more on it in the previous post.

– Scattered Stencils. Leo only starts with one random stencil pack and then finds more as he explores Las Nalgas.

– 4 new stencils (57 in total)

– 3 new parody characters! (5 total)The poll for the next parody character was a three way tie. I can’t promise I’ll do this again, but seeing as I’m late posting this update, I figured I’d try to make it up to you a little bit by adding all three characters. You’ll need to download the + version of the game to have them show up to your shop. (Also make sure to refuse Allison’s payment so she writes a nice review that will send these customers your way.)

Fixed:
– Changed “Brand Awareness” to “Interested Customers”

– Fixed the countdown to the election. It used to start when you tattooed Cass. But since that day can now change, that doesn’t make sense!

– I’ve sophisticated the code for saving tattoo screenshots. It used to dump them into an accessible folder, but now it gets saved with other save data. I think I’ll need it that way to make the mac version work, which has been giving me trouble lately.

– New game button. The old system was confusing. Clicking start opened the load game and you had to select an empty slot to start a new game. Now you just click the new game button like every other video game.

– The stencil scoring is just beginning! I’m looking forward to fleshing this out for the next update. Combos, multipliers, and more:)

– Free Mode: Now that you don’t have all the stencils at once, it’s more important than ever that I create a mode where you can use any that you have unlocked. It’d also be a great place to tattoo anybody you’ve seen already. Hopefully I can add this soon.

– Freehand draw: Also, as the game has embraced the stencil mode, freehand drawing is temporarily gone. I plan on putting it back in as something you can select alongside the stencils, but that might be more complicated than it sounds, so for the meantime, I just removed it.

– The new Rebel/Conform system has caused a couple hiccups. For example, Rosa’s two HumBull scene choices are shown as options at the same time, but only one will be accessible at a time. I have to go back into that code and restructure it. Please let me know if you notice any strange behavior.

– MAC ISSUE:  It seems Mac’s don’t like RenPy’s screenshot function, which messes up the in-game gallery and other scenes where Leo’s previous work must be displayed. I’m trying to think up a solution that doesn’t involve screenshots. I’ve got an idea but not sure yet how difficult it will be. I decided to upload the Mac version even though it has these issues since most of the game is still playable in the meantime.

– This is not the monthly update, just a small tech update to fix bugs that broke stencil positioning in the last one. This version also allows you to select all the tattoo stencils you want to use at the same time and drag and drop them all at the same time, making it a lot easier to adjust your vision!

– Become a test subject at the re-education clinic downtown. You’ll formally meet Farrah, a semi-burned out educator who happens to be one of your protesters. You can access this scene by selecting the flyer on the bench once the protest starts. (Or use the New Scenes Only Mode! More on that below)

– Farrah visits the shop.

– Revised Ice Cream scene with Rosa.

– Restructured game logic: Before, characters showed up to the parlor on specific days. Now, most of them are triggered by specific choices of actions. For example, to get Rosa to show up, in the revised ice cream scene, Leo has to order an ice cream sandwich from her, which will…peak her interest. And Cass will not show unless you attend her rally and make a particular choice.

– Stats! Leo’s stats now include Brand Awareness, money, and Strength! This should help make things a little clearer. When you trigger a character’s arrival for example, Leo receives a brand awareness token. When a character comes into the parlor for a tattoo, a brand awareness token is spent. (Maybe it should have a different name instead of brand awareness now, hmm.) You might be able to guess how to build the strength stat (the weights in the shop). At the moment there is not use for strength, but there will be!

– 5 new stencils including such timeless masterpieces as the Mona Lisa and The Scream!

– New Scenes Only mode: Building this was a helpful step toward having a proper gallery of scenes. It’ll jump you to new stuff so you don’t have to replay everything.

– The election day countdown wasn’t working before. For any fellow RenPy users, I’ll have you know sometimes changing game states within a screen just doesn’t work. I simply had to move some code into a label. If only all debugging was so easy.

Known Issues:
– In the process of revamping the tattoo system, it got temporarily worse! It seems to be okay as long as you drag a tattoo stencil before picking up the tool., meaning don’t make rotation or scale your last action before tatting. Multiple tats with rotation might not work. Ah! It’s embarrassing, but it should be all good and much better by the next update:)

– I haven’t fixed the Mac version bug during tattoo sessions.

– Adding custom tattoos using PNGs still doesn’t work.

– The second act of the fantasy arc is here. After visiting the mysterious structure on the hill, and attempting to go there a second time even though it’s just ruins, Pat will give a visit to the tattoo parlor and reveal a secret or two. Plus she patronizes the shop.

– Allison’s second camgirl webshow. In case you aren’t aware, you access her show from the selfservice app on Leo’s tablet. This marks the first animation in the game that I’ve used Moho to animate. Moho is a professional animation software that has been used to make a bunch of Oscar-nominated films. It’s been a bit of work getting the hang of it, but I’m liking it so far.

– The take a photo button has had a glow up.

– Las Nalgas’ cobblestone road! I’m probably more excited about this one than anybody else. The old cobblstone road was just a perspective warped image. Now it’s actually 3D modeled.

Fixed:

Not exactly a fix but a change is that I made the default brush size much bigger for working on the stencils. I imagine most players want to do that part quickly and aren’t trying to be precise. You can still choose a smaller nib size if you do need precision, however.

– First Fantasy genre scene – after selecting Fantasy at the library, the hyper palace becomes available to select as an afternoon activity. Setting this up took awhile because the hyper palace (plus ruins) were 3D modeled in Blender and I’m not much of an architect but hey I think it turned out pretty well.

– RPG Elements – Brand awareness and money are now tracked, making it more clear when you are paid and how much you need to make rent.

– 5 new tattoo stencils (53 in total)

NOTE: The save directory has been changed to “BTAS”. I realized it needed to be a name that works for both the NSFW and the SFW versions of the game, so that if someone who has started the SFW version wants to upgrade, they can continue their playthrough. Unfortunately, that means that this version won’t play your old saves. Sorry about that.

– Multi-Tattoo Stencils – Mix and match tattoo stencils to create an epic bootyscape.

– Modding – You can now easily add characters to the game. I will dedicate an entire post to this process in the next day or two. But if you can’t wait, there are instructions in the txt file of the mods folder and an empty background attached to this post to play with.

– Tattoo Session UI aesthetic upgrade

– Animation – Cassandra’s political rally is a lot more fun now, with a simple little hand-drawn animation of her front-tied shirt coming untied. These are the kind of animations I hope to have the game jam packed with eventually,

– Nib Sizes – One more tattoo session upgrade – You can now change the size of your tattoo nib. So if you want to go fast, grab the 15M; or go for the 3RL if you’re trying to be precise. (This is in stencil mode only; sorry freehand mode)

Fixed:

– Nib size use to scale with the stencil scale which resulted in strange results like the tiniest line if the stencil was scaled way down. This shouldn’t be a problem anymore.

– Game Over Bug – In v 0.1.8 my dumbass didn’t test the game over screen and what was supposed to go to the menu in fact did not do that. It should work now.

– KTLN reporter, Naya Cervantes, enters the tattoo parlor. She wants another interview but the only way she’s gonna get it is if she gets a tattoo!

– Randos! The random customer generator is in effect on some days. The first one comes in on day 4 (assuming you didn’t compromise on your butthole business and also rejected Allison’s cash).

– Tattoo Stencil Rotation! Finally! It’s been requested for a bit. It sounds easily. And…actually it was kind of easy once I realized what was screwing the whole thing up.

– The first Game Over Screen! If business doesn’t pick up, Leo can’t pay rent and we get the game’s first game over screen. How do you make sure business does pick up? Hint: Don’t compromise and refuse Allison’s money.

– A lewder interview with neighborhood council candidate, Cassandra. This interview is shown when Leo watches the KTLN app. I’ve added just a bit of spice to it.

– Other scenes including:

– Rita coming to collect rent

– Officer Montez coming to the parlor because of complaints of indecency

If you saw the second HumBull app scene for Rosa, you might recall that she mentioned reading a book for her Psychology of Sex class. The title of this book: Pornography of the Oppressed.

Is this a real book? Not that I’m aware of. But it is a reference to a real book called Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Written by Paulo Freire, this book was a real game changer to the world of education. Freire challenged conventional educational frameworks, suggesting that instead of a teacher depositing knowledge in learners’ minds, education could be co-constructed, with both teacher and students learning in the process. This opened up the possibility for education to be more than lectures, less authoritative and more communal. Many classrooms began grouping desks and having students think-pair-share, which is just one among a seemingly endless array of small group activities teachers now employ. If you prefer lectures, maybe this is disappointing. But since their are many types of learners out there, adding variety has generally been considered a good thing.

Pornography of the Oppressed—that’s the book Rosa was reading in BTAS—might not exist (yet), but I do think Patreon allows a game development framework that is along the lines of what such a book might describe.

After all, I’ve been referring to my patrons as shipmates because this ship can’t complete its voyage alone. The game has evolved a lot thanks to player feedback. Believe it or not, but when I first started I really thought the stencil-less freehand mode was all it needed for the tattoo sessions. It’s really grown into something much more than I expected it ever could be. And it continues to do so. So thank you! Thank you for co-constructing BTAS with me.
