Katawa Shoujo Prealpha Repair [Final] [Four Leaf Studios]

Katawa Shoujo is a bishoujo-style visual novel set at the fictional Yamaku High School for disabled students in modern Japan.

Katawa Shoujo is a bishoujo-style visual novel set at the fictional Yamaku High School for disabled students in modern Japan. After a congenital heart condition abruptly changes his life, Hisao Nakai transfers to Yamaku following a long hospitalisation, where he gradually forms new friendships and may pursue one of five main romantic paths.

The Alpha Repair Project restores and reconstructs an earlier, unfinished version of Katawa Shoujo that differs substantially from the official release. Several routes contain alternate storylines, scenes, character developments, and endings that were later rewritten or removed, with Hanako, Lilly, and Shizune showing some of the biggest differences. The project repairs broken scripts, reconnects unfinished branches, restores missing content, and makes the leaked Alpha version playable while preserving its distinct early-development story.

Some of the stories in the Alpha version can be much darker and grimmer than their final version couterparts.
Be wary that many of the “bad” endings can touch upon subjects like selfarm, violence and suicide.

Katawa Shoujo? In 2026? In this economy?
Yes, this is not a joke.
I always was a big fan of Katawa Shoujo. It literally was the first VN I ever heard of and tried back when it released in early 2012,.
To this day, I still think of it fondly to this day, but what if I was telling you it could have been something else entirely ?
For anyone who wasn’t around back then and wants a bit of context, Katawa Shoujo’s original script was leaked by a member of the team around the time the first demo was released.
The leak was mostly text-based, but it contained fully developed routes that were very different from what eventually made it into the 2012 release. Some of those early versions were rougher, stranger, darker, and for some, arguably more ambitious or more developed than what we got.
On 16 March 2013, after the final game had released and the leak had begun circulating, a group of volunteers came together with the goal of turning that unfinished and broken mess of data into something actually playable, reusing assets like sprites, CGs, music and so on from the official release, while repairing the original code, restoring broken scenes, extracting original musics and filling in enough gaps to make the old script function as a proper game.
The project went of for years. It changed hands, lost people, gained people, stalled, picked itself back up, and somehow kept going until it finally released on 30 April 2017.
And now, years later, the project is basically being kept alive by a single MEGA link buried in a dead Steam group.
That always bothered me a little, especially because I was directly involved during the final stretch of development, helping with QC and proofreading. Seeing all of that work hanging on a single link, with no real guarantee that it would stay online forever, always made me a little uneasy. So I figured it was finally time to put it somewhere safe, not only for preservation, but so both new and old fans can experience this strange alternate version of Katawa Shoujo, getting a glimpse of what this 4chan-born, industry-changing game once was, and what it could have been.
There is something genuinely nostalgic about coming back to this project after all these years. This version is far from perfect or polished, and we have always acknowledged that. It has its inherent flaws and shortcomings being based from a leak and remade by volunteer, particularly when it comes to missing key CGs and sprites for scenes that simply never had artwork made for them at the time of the leak. This was also long before AI was even a thing, so who knows, maybe someone will pick up the torch again one day and finally fill in some of those missing pieces, I know I would love to see it.
Even with those rough edges, though, I still think there is something special here.
I, and the other former team members I would imagine, hope you can appreciate this version for what it is, and enjoy it as much as we enjoyed restoring it.
So please, enjoy it.
A huge thanks to Jill Stingray, Teltaur, Kelper, the_muffin, StanR, Buttface, MemerAntoinette and Alpha KJ for making the project possible in the first place.
